To ensure a smooth recovery and minimize complications after your dental implant procedure, Dr. Sara Zeidan and our team encourage you to follow your post-op instructions closely. Proper care will help protect your new implant and promote effective healing.
- Refrain from rinsing your mouth on the day of your surgery. Starting the next day, use a warm saltwater rinse every two to three hours to reduce bacteria and soothe the surgical site. Prepare the rinse by dissolving a half-teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of water. After a few days, transition to rinsing after meals and before bed for two weeks.
- Take any prescribed medications, antibiotics or oral rinses exactly as directed. For pain relief, use over-the-counter options such as Tylenol, Advil or ibuprofen as recommended by our dentist. If discomfort persists, contact our office for guidance.
- You can begin brushing the day after your surgery but be careful to avoid the implant site for several days.
- If a temporary crown was placed, do not chew or apply pressure on it until we confirm that it is safe to do so. Similarly, avoid wearing any dentures or appliances over the implant area until given permission by our team.
- Swelling is common in the first 48 hours following implant placement. Use a cold compress on the affected side of your face in 15-minute intervals to reduce swelling. After 48 hours, switch to warm compresses to ease discomfort and promote circulation.
- Keep your lips moisturized with lip balm or Vaseline to prevent dryness.
- Avoid operating machinery or driving for at least 12 hours after your procedure, especially if you were sedated.
- Refrain from smoking or using tobacco products, as these can impair healing and increase the risk of implant failure.
- For patients using oral contraceptives, we recommend an alternate form of birth control if antibiotics were prescribed, as they can reduce contraceptive effectiveness.
If a healing abutment or cover screw becomes loose or falls out, contact BB Dental Studio immediately, and bring the part with you to your appointment so our dentist can replace it.
